Revolution 2011 (ربيع)

"Revolution 2011 (ربيع)"
Woodblock print on papyrus
15.5" x 11"

Edition of 19
This piece was made in response to the Arab Spring revolutions that took place in Egypt, as well as other North African and Arabic countries, in early 2011. Aside from the hope and genuine support that a people's revolution tends to create, there was something very intriguing to me about these events. Facebook, of all things, was said to have been an essential tool for the organizers of the revolution in Egypt. It was so effective that the former Egyptian government actually activated and "internet kill switch" for several days in a failed effort to quell the revolt

It's fascinating to see a website that most view as an idle social tool used in such a profound way. Technological and social advances like the Facebook platform tend to be written off as not worthy of serious scrutiny beyond user privacy. But the Egypt revolutionaries have proved that such explicitly modern things can become nation changing tools – and they did so in a land most widely known for its ancient history.
